While selecting a course for pursuing, you must have always wondered how beneficial it is for you? What are its pros and cons, what university/platform you should select for pursuing that particular course?
The same applies to a GST certification course. Before diving into the top 10 colleges and universities that offer GST certification courses in your city, let’s grasp the basic concept of GST and why it’s important.
What does GST mean?
GST stands for goods and service tax. This tax is implied on all the goods and services that are sold for the purpose of domestic consumption. This tax is used globally in many countries and has a fixed single rate. GST is added at the time of final purchase that is paid by the consumers and passed to the government by the means of sellers.
The countries which operate on GST have a unified GST system meaning that these countries work under the same tax rate. These countries merge state-level tax i.e. entertainment tax, entry tax, etc and central tax i.e. sales tax, service tax, etc and collect it as a single tax.
The first country to ever implement GST in their system was France in the year 1954. Since then, around 160 countries have established GST policy, a few of them being Australia, Canada, Italy, Singapore, and INDIA.
India has established the GST system on 1st July 2017. Before its implementation, state and central governments had various tax laws which are now merged into only one law. GST rates vary on different products and are always between 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.
History of Goods and Service Tax in India
Originally, GST was brought in India in the year 2000 but was lawfully amended in the year 2017. this idea was first suggested by Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the year 2000. this proposal was governed and examined by representatives from state and center governments.
An empowered committee (EC) was formed to create a structure for GST by the state finance ministers. this committee was headed by Asim Dasgupta, the finance minister of West Bengal.
In 2004, Vijay L. Kelkar accompanied by a task force proposed that the existing tax structure has several issues and they should implement the new tax system. in 2005-2006, the finance minister of that time, P. Chidambaram said that the long term goal of the government should be to implement a uniform tax structure which was also discussed in the budget session of that year.
In 2008, the finance minister confirmed that progress was being made in the preparation of the roadmap of the new GST system, and in 2009, Pranab Mukherjee confirmed and announced the basic skeleton of the new GST.
In 2010, the govt introduced a project that laid the basic foundation of GST, but because of the budget of over 1.2 crores, the implementation was pushed for another year.
In 2011, the congress govt put forward the constitution bill that introduced the GST but was opposed by other parties so it was sent for detailed examination by the standing committee.
In the next years followed, many changes were made in the constitution bill and a lot of debates over this topic but were finally resolved in 2016 when the honorable president of India gave his consent to make the bill an Act.
In 2017, it finally became law and four bills related to GST became an act which was, CGST Bill, IGST Bill, UTGST Bill and GST Bill, which were applicable from 1 July 2017.

Types of GST
There are four types of GST:
- CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax)
- IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax)
- SGST (State Goods and Services Tax)
- UTGST (Union Territory Goods and Services Tax)
CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax)
When a product or service is charged intra statewide, CGST is charged. The central government is responsible for the imposing of CGST and its governed under the CGST Act (Central Goods and Service Tax Act).it is charged as per the same rate of SGST and has replaced all the existing central taxes such as service tax, CST, custom duty, etc.
IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax)
IGST is implemented when goods and services are exchanged interstate wise. The central government is responsible for collecting IGST and distributing it to other states.
SGST (State Goods and Services Tax)
When a good or service is sold within a state, SGST is charged. The state government imposes the SGST on these products and services and collects it from the sellers after it’s imposed on the taxpayers just like CGST. This tax has replaced previous taxes such as entertainment tax, entry tax, value-added tax, etc.
UTGST (Union Territory Goods and Services Tax)
As understandable from its name, UTGST is imposed on the products and services that are exported in the union territories in the country such as Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Daman and Diu, Dadar and Nagar Haveli, etc. This tax is imposed along with CGST.
Advantages of GST
- The implementation of GST has brought all the taxes under one umbrella which means that the effects of previous taxes have gone and made the purchases cheaper.
- The procedure for registration of GST has become simple, which means that it could be done online and by anyone, even if that individual doesn’t have the technical knowledge about it.
- The burden that small business owners have due to various taxes has been reduced. That means if a small business had a turnover of say around 20lakh, the new composition scheme can be beneficial to them by lowering their taxes.
- Before the implementation of GST, people used to pay a lot of taxes which was a very complicated process. For example, VAT amount was different in different states, some taxes were needed to be paid on a monthly or quarterly basis, but with the implementation of GST, now people had to pay a uniform tax for the supply of products and services.
- Before its implementation, many industries such as textile, were highly unorganized, but now they have seen growth, are now organized, and also have included online payment methods and compliance.
